Restrained, eco-friendly and minimalist designs dominate the colour palette at the packaging industry's biggest showcase since the start of the corona crisis. Sustainability has become a must – and it is finding its way into design, functionality, materials and form language. For example, Mondi Group presented fresh packaging for ready-to-eat salad that is made of 95% paper and meets all the requirements for recycling in the paper bin.

Special show "Sustainable Packaging”

At the special show "Sustainable Packaging" by bayern design in cooperation with NürnbergMesse, the Bavarian Competence Center for Design is showcasing how international designers create sustainable packaging.

"The innovations on display are a source of inspiration for FACHPACK visitors. Clever design as part of a circular economy opens up completely new possibilities here. It increases the attractiveness of sustainable packaging and at the same time offers added value for the company. In addition, good packaging design creates an aesthetic symbol for the brand's sustainability," says Nadine Vicentini, the new managing director of bayern design GmbH.

The C2 team was particularly impressed by Meal Bag, an edible food packaging made mainly from corn starch. The material was developed by Regensburg-based industrial and product designer Amelie Graf. It dissolves in hot water and can thus be easily added to the meal – as a sauce binder or as a supplier of fibre and energy. Or the packaging can be returned to the natural cycle in home compost.

“Networking again at last!”

In conversation with C2, numerous exhibitors from the converting sector were pleased about the comeback for attendance trade shows after a long dry spell. "Networking again at last!" enthused one exhibitor. The assessments of the exhibiting companies were almost unanimous: more visitors than could have been hoped for, a high-calibre audience, good business already early on the first day. Even the smaller number of exhibitors than in previous years was not necessarily seen as negative: "The important players are here. This encourages us to continue our presence at FACHPACK," said an exhibitor from Switzerland.
