New removable adhesives

25.11.2019 Removable label adhesives often have system-related weaknesses – for example when it comes to thermal papers or noble or critical surfaces. To change this, Herma relies on its innovative multi-layer technology.

With the new removable adhesive 42Rpp, for example, the feared breakthrough of the adhesive through the thermal paper, which can make printed barcodes illegible over time, is a thing of the past. Tests show that even after five months and at temperatures of up to 40°C, the legibility of the label print remains good. This is important because such labels are often used on reusable containers in intralogistics. Their long-lasting legibility is a prerequisite for reliable processes. Moreover, adhesive residues that remain on the surface to be glued when the container is removed – so-called "staining" – are no longer a problem. This allows users to apply even high-quality, finished packaging themselves with thermal labels without fear of residues. The company has also been able to noticeably minimise the tightening of the adhesive after labelling, i.e. the technical loss of removability over time. This is ensured by the multi-layer technology developed by Herma, in which two layers of adhesive, each with special properties, are applied simultaneously.

Universally applicable without ghosting

The multi-layer technology not only benefits thermal labels: the new removable adhesive 42Lpp convinces on numerous different surfaces and guarantees particularly good removability on glass, metal and plastic. It is extremely resistant to plasticisers and does not tighten even after exposure to heat up to 65°C – peelability is guaranteed. This property is particularly valuable for users in the glass industry. Ghosting" – a non-sticky, but veil-like and clearly visible residue on bonded surfaces – is no longer a problem with the 42Lpp thanks to Herma multi-layer technology.

Small minimum coating quantities

With the HERMA 42X UV acrylate-based adhesive, which can also be removed, the manufacturer offers printers and label users a further valuable plus: thanks to small minimum coating quantities of just 1000m2, even special label materials can be made removable. Even partial rubber coatings can be achieved with the adhesive. For example, flap labels can be produced without any problems. Customers are therefore highly flexible in their choice of label materials and can quickly test in practice whether a special combination of pressure-sensitive adhesive and label material is suitable for the desired application. In principle, the 42X guarantees good adhesion and removability on a variety of substrates. At the same time it offers the best resistance to water, detergents and oils and shows no increase in adhesion over time – the removability remains unchanged in the long run.
