By 2040, The Ocean Cleanup aims to collect 90 per cent of the marine litter floating on the surface.

"We can contribute to a functioning circular economy with our ultrasonic welding technology. But we know that many plastic products are still not disposed of properly and end up in the environment instead," CEO Thomas Herrmann explains the motivation behind the donation. "That's why we want to help collect this valuable raw material again to prevent damage to nature."

Extraction of plastic particles from the oceans

For the extraction, The Ocean Cleanup uses specially developed collection systems. With the help of the ocean current, plastic particles ranging in size from several metres to a few millimetres can be collected without disturbing local ecosystems. The collected plastic is to be recycled and reused for the manufacture of new products. Currently, the systems are mainly used to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, but in the future they will contribute to the elimination of plastic waste globally.
